Being the change we want to see

When a child or young person presents with challenging behaviour, the first thing we can change is ourselves and how we respond, which can make all the difference to the outcome. This is especially true if they are at risk of being excluded. Their behaviour is so often a communication about their relational and learning needs, and some of the strongest needs in that mix will be for adults capable of genuinely connecting with them, seeing and valuing them beneath the behaviour, and working to meet them in the most helpful way we can.

And it is 'we' - we are all accountable for how we respond and for the environment in which children and young people who have experienced trauma and loss struggle to find a footing.

Our webinar speakers, both highly experienced lead practitioners from Virtual schools (Hampshire and Cumberland), have given this issue serious thought, and used the AFIT needs analysis software to support themselves and their teams to develop their capacity to be the 'Adults who ...' with heartening outcomes for the children and young people they work with.

Sometimes it can be hard to know if the work you are doing with a pupil day-to-day in school is actually having an impact, and challenging to create appropriate data to evidence this when you need to.

There are more than 200,000 children and young people living in Kinship Care in the UK, and the number is growing fast.

The needs of Kinship Carers, family members or family friends who care for children when their birth parents cannot, are often overlooked or misunderstood. Carers themselves can struggle with all the challenges of welcoming the child into their family life and supporting them at home and at school.

This is especially true when the child or young person has experienced trauma from the circumstances which lead to them moving into Kinship Care, as well as the ongoing separation from their parent(s), their previous life, and the challenges of contact.

Having worked with Kinship Families for many years, Educational Psychologist Dr Rachel King will be introducing her Belonging Model®, created by drawing on practice-based evidence of supporting Carers through the process of enabling their child to feel safe, settle and thrive in their new home, as well as at school.

Using books in conversations with looked after children

This webinar will provide you with ideas for using books to support looked after children on issues which really matter to them, whether they be living with foster parents, in children's homes or other similar arrangements.

They may have a lot of worries, concerns and questions, and sometimes we may not know if we are the 'right person' to have a conversation that could really help them.

Clinical Psychologist Shona Quin (Psychology Space) has worked in child and adolescent mental health services for over 20 years, specialising in working with children and adolescents living away from home.

Shona will introduce the benefits of bibliotherapy and how to use it, as well as introducing material she has written herself, on such relevant themes as arriving into foster placement, experience big emotions and coping with them, experiencing flashbacks, and more.

An opportunity to preview part of 'A Cronx Tale', an 'unapologetically hard-hitting 18 minute animation' supporting young people who may be vulnerable to becoming involved with gangs and crime, to consider their options, and choose a better path.

CourseWeDo is delighted to host a presentation from staff from long established youth charity the Croydon Drop-In , in a part of London where these issues affect far too many young people, including some of those who have been in care or have already experienced adverse childhood experiences.

We will hear from film writer/director Chardine Makaveli-Singh, herself an outreach worker in Croydon, and Clinton Waller, the CDI Outreach Manager with long experience of supporting young people

What COVID has done to Children & Young People? How we can help

Life in school post Covid - absenteeism and mental health difficulties - share effective, supportive practice and innovation

Educational staff throughout the country have been commenting on the profound differences between life in school pre and post Covid. Whilst some CYP actually benefited from not being at school in those years, there is clear evidence that numerous combining factors involved in not being in school for long periods has had adverse effects for many. First perhaps amongst many issues, absenteeism, evidenced by the higher rates of emotionally based school non-attendance (EBSNA) and mental health difficulties in secondary provision. And at the other end of the age spectrum, children coming into Reception with speech and language difficulties, separation anxiety, and feeling overwhelmed both by so many other children and by learning. These challenges present additional stressors for staff who have themselves been affected by the pandemic in diverse ways.

Our webinar will provide a forum to share experiences, and crucially, to share effective, supportive practice and innovation in your context which might help other school staff (and parents and carers) in theirs.

Helping to support the creation of the best plan for each child/young person, through collaboration whilst saving EP/school staff time and money

An Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) is a legal document which describes a child/young person’s special educational needs, the support they need and the agreed outcomes. Educational Psychologist, Dr Rachael King, will remind us of some EHCP basics, and outline ways schools can build effective evidence to submit during the application process, and to be confident that they can provide an EP coming to carrying out an EHCP needs assessment with all the useful and necessary information they need, including by the use of Reach2Teach Action for Inclusion Tool - AFIT.

This will ensure a better understanding of need through a collaborative and efficient process, saving the EP and school staff time, helping to support the creation of the best plan for each child/young person.

A very special CourseWeDo webinar with Dr Dan Hughes and colleagues from Family Futures .

Family Futures has been working with and supporting adoptive, foster, and special guardian families for over 20 years, developing an expertise in working with children and young people who have experienced significant trauma. For nearly all this time, Family Futures has had a long standing relationship with child and adolescent psychologist Dr Daniel Hughes, from their first meeting with him in Boston USA in 2000 to our first inviting him to come to the UK to present and offers his trainings to British professionals and parents.

Together, Family Futures and Daniel Hughes have developed best practice in what helps traumatised children heal, recognising the vital importance of regulation and attunement. Trauma in infancy leads to dysregulation of feeling states so helping children being more regulated is a vital to parenting, and indeed, learning in school.

Alongside this, the formation of secure attachments in infancy is crucial as it becomes the cornerstone for all of life’s interpersonal interactions. Calming the body and regulating the nervous system is essential for children who have experienced trauma and their families, whatever therapy approach is being offered, and whatever the setting for learning.

Family Futures specialises in integrating sensory, somatic and body-based approaches into all aspects of therapy; ideas from their practice can also be integrated into school and home life. This work is the essential foundation which is required to enable both children and adults to find an internal sense of calm so that they can begin to access their feelings and make sense of their experiences. It is the body to body, nervous system to nervous system interaction that is key!

This is a unique opportunity to spend time with Dr Heather Geddes who has spent her working life enabling children and young people settle to learn, especially those whose attachment difficulties and experience of extremely difficult early lives first moved her to focus on their predicament and challenges.

Dr Geddes is the author of the classic book, Attachment in the Classroom, first published in 2006, widely respected as the book that first made explicit the critical connections between a child's earliest experiences of attachment, and how they are - or are not - able to relate to teacher and task in school, through her simple but iconic Learning Triangle. At a time when some in education were saying, 'This attachment stuff is great - but what do we DO about it?' - she indicated the path to follow - how to use task to create, develop and balance the need for relationship, fundamental to our capacity to be open to and fully engage in learning.

The Author
After initially training and working as a nurse, then as a Health Visitor and completing a degree with the Open University, Sheila Mulvenney first started to teach mature students on child care and Care Management courses at undergraduate, HNC/D or National Diploma level. She became aware that many mature students still had obstacles to overcome from their background or previous learning experiences, and a number struggled with literacy. It has been very pleasing for her to meet and work with social workers who had completed their initial training on courses she managed and delivered. After completing a PGCE, Sheila went on to work in a number of different settings with younger students, often with those who experienced social, emotional or behavioural difficulties, had other special educational needs or were looked after. Her roles included being a SENCo in a specialist provision and Head Teacher of a small school for students who were all in care and resident within the organisation. These roles led to work in local authorities focussing on behaviour or inclusion and then with children in care as head of a Virtual School. In addition, Sheila is a qualified Sounds-Write trainer, regularly running phonics courses for teachers in schools. She is also qualified as a teacher of English as a foreign language having taught English to, and hosted, a large number of students from other countries. Her interest in meeting the emotional needs of children in care led her to train as a therapist in Emotional Freedom Technique, and she now runs her own company offering training, tuition, therapy and consultancy to individuals, schools and other organisations and undertakes various interim appointments within local authorities.

The Book
There are a great many children and young people in our classrooms struggling with a range of social and emotional problems across what teacher and interim Virtual Head Sheila Mulvenney describes as 'the spectrum of trouble'. At one end, the pupil may have experienced severe difficulties, such as neglect, trauma and abuse, the death or imprisonment of a parent; at the other, the pupil may have experienced parental or sibling ill health, separation through parents being posted overseas, having financial difficulties. Such 'troubles' may be long or short term, but coming into school, these pupils are unlikely to be in a state of readiness for learning. Their distress may not only prevent them from being curious, engaged and open, but expressed in challenging behaviour, can quickly disrupt others learning too.

Mulvenny shows how relationships with staff in school are critical to enabling pupils and students to feel secure; how essential a 'culture of care' of both staff and pupils is to creating the right environment for concentration and good learning, and how it can be improved; how staff managing their own emotional experience can both reduce the likelihood 'collisions in the classroom' and also provide modelling for pupils and students on how to mitigate the worse effects of the distress they are experiencing. She also addresses how language used in school can be modified to challenge the 'scripts' our pupils carry with them in more constructive direction. In short, a blue print to overcome barriers to learning.

We know that when we think from an attachment aware, trauma informed perspective, exclusion is highly likely to reinforce the cycle of rejection and isolation for children and young people whose challenging behaviour has brought them to that point.

Can we say confidently that their background and circumstances will inevitably be characterised by adverse childhood experiences? And if so, how has the communication of their distress through their behaviour not been picked up earlier, and addressed? What are we excluding them to? Can exclusion ever be constructive?

Anita M Hughes has been running the Friendly Group with her colleagues for 18 years, supporting more than 200 children and young people in that time. The Friendly Group is a social and therapeutic group for children and young people on the Autism Spectrum who struggle to make relationships and share feelings with others. The author describes the core principles of this extremely successful group and the structure and framework offered. These children appear to cope without real friendships, but often from an increasingly isolated position. Their behaviour is often driven by anxiety, made worse by feeling different. Families experience frustration and uncertainty about how they can help. Through vivid accounts Hughes describes how the group leaders can facilitate children and young people to support each other, and to think and talk about what happens inside and between them in the 'here- and- now'. Professionals working with children and young people and their families in and outside school will find a fantastic range of ideas here on how to work in similar groups, with a sound sense of how to 'contain' children's and young people's anxiety. Parents too, will find inspiration. As Hughes states "when we have faith in the children we live or work with, they will blossom".

The Author
Anita M Hughes BA MEd CPsychol AFBPsS is a teacher and chartered educational psychologist. She worked in social services and education services in South Wales, London and Surrey before setting up in private practice in 1999 in Guildford, Surrey. When Anita worked as a consultant in the council day nurseries of Hammersmith & Fulham in the early 1980s she met and worked with Elinor Goldschmied, collaborating in writing, teaching and film making and developing the ideas of Heuristic Play. Anita has also published three books about play and learning in the Early Years as well as collaborating with Veronica Read in a book for teachers on how to build positive relationships with parents. On moving to Surrey in 1986, Anita began working in local authority mainstream and special schools across the age range. She worked with teachers and parents to assess children's learning, emotional and behavioural difficulties and to support them through classroom advice, running groups and training courses. It was at this time that her interest in autism developed into a passion and she started to run groups for children in schools, together with teaching support staff to run their own groups. Anita set up the Friendly Group in 1999 when she began her own private practice. Her private practice has included IQ assessments, consultation advice, counselling and delivering training workshops. In recent years her focus has been on family and individual counselling. However, her overriding love is her work with ASD children, young people and their parents.

We have presented at conferences run by the British Association of Play Therapists (BAPT); Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties Association (SEBDA) and NASEN. As well as her qualification as a BAPT play therapist she is a registered Clinical Supervisor and Filial Therapist and has trained in Animal Assisted Play Therapy.

Mental Health Matters - Suicide Awareness & Prevention

A short film as a resource to raise awareness of suicidal behaviours, how to prevent them and how to support anyone who is affected by suicide, suicidal ideation or self-harm, be that of themselves or someone close to them. Includes an interview with Sam Johnson, Counsellor and Psychotherapist, on her experiences of supporting children with suicidal behaviours.

September is suicide awareness month. The aims of this month is to raise awareness of suicidal behaviours and how to prevent them, including promotion of action at national levels. Closer to home mental health organisations are working closely together to support anyone who is affected by self harm, suicidal ideation or by suicide, but also someone who is affected by someone else in their family if someone else has had those feelings or who has acted in that way.

Alongside you we want to support this movement by joining the collaboration and also to support you as adults who are working on the frontline with children and young people in schools and other contexts, by making this short film as a resources for you.

Little-Mouse Finds a Safe Place is a children's storybook designed to help professionals support children who have experienced and witnessed domestic violence and abuse, and also contains guidelines on the key issues and how to use the story with individuals and groups.

Little-Mouse is confused and anxious. He liked his new Dad and his Mum says everything is OK, but Little-Mouse is seeing things and hearing things that make him feel really worried. Little-Mouse doesn't know what to do, or who to talk to. When things get even worse, Little-Mouse suddenly finds himself needing to make a decision. What will Little-Mouse do? Will he and his Mum get away? Will Little-Mouse ever feel safe again?

When children have experienced or witnessed domestic abuse and violence, they are frequently left with many confusing and worrying emotions. They need to be enabled by empathic adults to safely express and understand their experience, and to work through and make sense of their feelings.

The Author

Creating schools that are secure, safe, and peaceful is crucial if all pupils are going to benefit from their education. This is especially important for those who might be vulnerable, traumatised and unable to settle into normal school routine. Key to this whole process, though, are our teachers. Unless teachers feel secure, valued and peaceful in their classrooms, they will not be in a position to extend these key qualities to those they teach. I knew the book would be great but was really good to hear about it from Andrea and Louise.

The host was lovely and passionate and the opportunity to hear from the author herself felt empowering.

Again I was inspired by Louises commitment to children and young people who can so easily be misunderstood and let down in an educational setting. I wish we’d had more time

Just wanted to give my thanks to Louise and Andrea for an hour of inspiring and passionate discussion about how we can support all children as well as those who already have a history of early life trauma at this time. It was an hour of calm between child protection zoom meetings, planning and risk assessing for school to re-open! A timely reminder of what we all hold dear for the children in our care as well as for the staff we work with.

I have read many of Louise's books and watched a number of webinars over the last few weeks. I am inspired by her knowledge and practical application of strategies. This is so pertinent at this current time and has really helped to plan next steps and move forward with our whole school approach.

It was so good to feel part of a community of people with a common vision, or mission!

I really enjoyed listening to someone who is experienced and practiced in the real and sometimes rough realities TA's are often faced with- not speaking or writing simply from theory. It was really quite refreshing. Thank you.

I loved it! But I would have loved it even more if it had been longer. It stimulated so much discussion and thought and I felt there wasn't enough time to do it all justice. I bought the book from Worth Publishing straight after the webinar.

I was inspired by Louises passion and her words Just sat with me so Much more than reading them !I have her book in order from Worth which I would not have bought without attending the webinar which was wonderfully run and so relaxed it was as if we were all together

Loved your enthusiasm when talking in depth about how we can see our children in a different way

I found it really refreshing and inspiring to hear of all the work that is so important for all children and young people in all schools and to have that confirmed once again through the work and research Louise has carried out. Louise's points were really clear and well articulated, as were yours Andrea. The big challenge is how to deconstruct school systems that are sanction driven that don't work and to reverse the culture of exclusion. Huge schools are like factory farms for pupils and just don't have the personalisation, containment and financial capacity to provide a holistic, integrated approach. The webinar was underlined further the need for longterm investment and restructuring of the school system so that it is not toxic and brutalising. I would be interested in any work/research that is going on around schools not using Team Teach or R.P.I to 'manage' behaviour. That is also an area that needs further development, particular in SEMH settings.

I really enjoyed the webinar and what was really lovely was the celebration with the three of you at the end! I had a wee tear! Wishing you all every success with the book and I cant wait for mine to arrive!

I found it very interesting to hear how Louise viewed the impact of Covid-19 and how this very relevant issue was incorporated into the webinar!

Louise has written the book that needed to be written! She has synthesised everything that I have been reading and watching.( I have Van der Kolk, Maté, Perry etc. ) It's all there in one book.
